J. BRIAN SLAUGHTER

Brian is a Shareholder of the Firm, regularly representing clients in both State and Federal Courts, as well as before administrative law agencies of the State and Federal Government. Brian handles the defense of matters in civil litigation primarily, with a particular emphasis on toxic tort claims related to asbestos, lead and other products. Brian handles matters involving construction disputes and defects, contract disputes, personal injuries and workers’ compensation claims both under the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Act and the Federal Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act.
Most recently, Brian has managed the defense of nearly two dozen builders, developers and installers in over one hundred and forty lawsuits filed in Virginia, as well as multiple class-action suits filed in Louisiana, related to the installation of allegedly-defective “Chinese drywall” across southeast Virginia.
Brian is an Associate Member of the Tidewater Builders Association and National Association of Home Builders. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association and the Virginia Beach Bar Association.
From 1999 to 2004, Brian served the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Staff Attorney and Mediator for the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission. While at the Commission, Brian served as Editor of the Lexis publication The Virginia Workers’ Compensation Act Annotated, editing the 2002 and 2003 editions.
Brian is a native of Virginia, but has traveled extensively. He lived in Mexico City, Mexico as a child, attending the prestigious American School Foundation school. Brian did his undergraduate work at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and earned his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Brian is a past member of the Alabama State Bar, and currently admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana (MDL 2047), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (MDL 875) and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Brian is married with young children, and lives in Suffolk, Virginia. Brian is a member of the Advisory Board of the Portsmouth Catholic Regional School, located in Portsmouth, Virginia.
