J. BRIAN SLAUGHTER
Brian's practice is focused primarily in the defense of workers’ compensation and toxic tort claims.
From 1999 to 2004, Brian served the Commonwealth as a Staff Attorney and Mediator for the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission in Richmond, Virginia. During his time at the Commission, Brian was involved in many facets of the Commission’s work. He wrote over 600 draft opinions in matters on appeal before the Full Commission. He served as a mediator, traveling across Virginia to assist parties in resolving matters before the Commission. Brian was the Commission Editor for the 2002 and 2003 Editions of the Lexis publication, The Virginia Workers’ Compensation Act Annotated. Brian oversaw the regulatory process for implementing, and drafted the text of the Commission’s rules governing expedited hearings in Virginia (Rule 2.3). Brian has been a frequent speaker regarding workers’ compensation matters in Virginia.
In recent years, Brian has devoted a considerable amount of his work time to the defense of asbestos-related claims filed in jurisdictions across Virginia and else where.
Brian was admitted in September 2009 to the Unites States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.
Brian did his undergraduate work at the College of William and Mary, and received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Prior to his work in Virginia, Brain practiced law in Huntsville, Alabama.
Brian is married, has young children and spends most of his free time with his family near his home in Suffolk, Virginia.
